5 Easy Ways to Nourish Your Nervous System

The Nervous System is the most important organ system in the body. It is made up of the brain and the spinal cord.

Within the Nervous System, there are sub-systems responsible for particular actions:  the peripheral nervous system nerves extending from the brain and spinal cord, and the autonomic nervous system—controls involuntary actions of the body.

These sub-systems are responsible for body actions such as the reflex when we touch something hot or cold, or breathing and blinking, lifting one’s hand to scratch an itch or when we face an unpleasant situation (like stress) and our heart races and our stomach churns in discomfort.

When the Nervous System endures stress, conditions such as headaches, migraines, insomnia, crankiness can develop. Prolong stress can result in hair loss, lower back pain, neck pain and weight gain or loss. The following diseases, too, are associated with the Nervous System:  Meningitis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Dementia, and MS.

Strengthening the Nervous System and keeping it strong will allow our bodies to deal with stress better and possibly avoid some of its unpleasant side effects. Also having a strong Nervous System might be the key to avoiding more serious illnesses.

The following are my 5 easy suggestions to help you keep your Nervous System strong and healthy:

  1. Eat whole unprocessed foods: Eat dark leafy foods, minimally cooked are high in calcium, which is calming to the Nervous System, and packed with nutrients. Include fruits, root vegetables, leafy greens, and oats.
  2. Drink herbal teas:  Oat straw, Nettle, and Chamomile are fabulous choices. Herbal teas can be used to help us wind down, relax and at the same time nourish us.
  3. Meditation:  Breath Meditation is the simplest practice. It increases relaxation, promotes sleep, increases serotonin production that improves mood thereby increases one’s state of happiness. Meditation decreases anxiety. Anxiety leads to stress and depression (how about just dealing with stressful situations easier), boosts immune system – who wants to be sick all the time, decreases pain – headache/migraine, back pain, etc. It promotes emotional balance creating an overall state of harmony.
  4. Exercise:  Exercise improves sleep quality thereby improving overall health. It also improves digestion and that means more nutrients will get to the Nervous System. Why not try Yoga, Walking or Tai Chi.
  5. Socialize:  Even going for a quick lunch with a friend is great for the soul - it makes us feel better when we hang out with people we like - smiling and laughing - how nourishing!

A healthy Nervous System will benefit the entire body. Eat well...live well...feel well.
