Meditate Your Way to Better Health

Good health isn’t just about what you feed your body it’s also about what you feed your mind and your heart. Meditation is the perfect addition to your health and wellness routine and it doesn’t cost anything to do!

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines meditation as ‘to engage in contemplation or reflection,’ but I prefer the following definition instead:  According to the website “the thebuddhistcentre.com” and I quote:  “Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. Buddhist meditation practices are techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things. By engaging with a particular meditation practice, you learn the patterns and habits of your mind, and the practice offers a means to cultivate new, more positive ways of being. With regular work and patience, these nourishing, focused states of mind can deepen into profoundly peaceful and energized states of mind. Such experiences can have a transformative effect and can lead to a new understanding of life.”

But you don’t have to be a Buddhist to practice meditation.

There are many reasons to mediate—physical and mental.  Consider some of the following:

increases relaxation

So how does one meditate?

Well, the easiest way I find is using the breath (breathing) in and out and just focusing on that breath and if I have an emotion that is creating stress, I focus on that—I breathe in thinking about that emotion and then I breathe out separating myself from that emotion. Sometimes, I even listen to a meditation audio—one with positive affirmations and soft nature sounds in the background. I personally don’t use anything fancy to sit in (chair, cushions, etc). I sit upright so I don’t fall asleep – you can even do it at work. I started watching Gaiam TV’s meditation training and found it helpful because of the instructions.

I highly recommend finding some form of meditation. You deserve to feel wonderful in your life. You deserve to feel and be happy. Find what works for you—it may be journal writing as explained in the Morning Pages by Julia Cameron (The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity), or the Rosary beads or just breathing. The tool you need to be healthy and happy is out there. I wish you much happiness in YOUR journey.

To your health,
